i bet you didnt know….Facts About Hair
Mercedes Robinson- Founder Chicbythelayers
When I was a young girl my hair was down to my bra strap. I know that it’s not rare for black women to have long hair, but in my neighbor hood I was one of few black girls that had long hair.
My mother would always say “don’t let nobody play in your hair!” , so I listened. Girls in school would be so fascinated with the length and thickness of my hair and ask “ Can I play in your hair?”. Immediately I said no. i had this notion that if anyone played in my hair besides my mother or the Dominicans I wouldn’t have any hair left.
I never understood the science behind hair until I started trichology school 2 years ago. Before school I was just a hairstylist that knew how to style and had some product knowledge.
School changed my life because I learned so many reasons as to why women experience hair loss and the hair growth process.
No more listening to unqualified people on Tiktok or YouTube rant about what they think they know about hair.
I bet you didn’t know the growth phase (anagen) of the hair can be as short as 2 years and as long as 10 years. This means some people may never experience the length others do. Our hair goes through stages outside of the anagen stage, such as telegon and Cartagen which are the shedding and resting phases of the hair. Then cycle begins again.
I bet you didn’t know that there is nothing you can put on your hair to make it grow. Stop listening to these ads that promise growth by applying an oil to your scalp. It’s all about what you put in your body that helps with hair growth. Next time you apply your favorite oil to your scalp give yourself a scalp massage for 2 minutes. The circulation will promote hair growth.
I bet you didn’t know the amount of follicles you’re born with is all you get. Yup! I might tell you a joke but I won’t tell you a lie! When we’re born we have hair that is very downy and soft and then it changes its texture to what we call terminal hair that becomes thicker. Though the vellus hair is very soft and downy the follicle that the hair grows from is the same.
I bet you didn’t know the curlier the hair is the weaker the hair is. Every twist and turn of the hair changes the diameter of the hair strand causing weakness. Delicate services may be best for curlier patterns to avoid easy breakage.
